While the toilet room would hardly be at the top of anyone’s list of favorite rooms in the house, there are still ways to make it interesting. One of those is throwing out your boring white toilet paper holder and replacing it with something more original. And, another one is storing your extra toilet paper rolls in eye-catching holders rather than in a random cabinet.
Below, I share 19 great toilet paper holder ideas. They include both ideas for how to hold the roll you are currently using as well as for how to store your spare ones.
The Best Toilet Paper Holder Ideas: Images to Inspire You
Some of the ideas below are products that you can purchase easily and install within a minute or two. Others are a bit more complicated and require some DIY work.
The ideas that will work the best for you will depend on how your toilet is designed overall, how many spare rolls you prefer to have in your toilet room, and so on. As such, the ideas below are in no particular order. Instead, they are meant to inspire you and give you something to start with when coming up with your own, unique ideas.
Now, let’s jump into the actual list.
1. A Rope Hanger
In this classic toilet paper holder idea, the toilet paper roll hangs on a piece of rope that is secured to a branch or a hook.
While you can get some ready-made products that are based on this concept, it’s also a great DIY project to do yourself or with your kids.
All you will need to get are a tree branch and a rope – and something to secure them to the wall with. In fact, chances are that you already have most, if not all, of those things at your home.

2. An Animal with a Long Neck (or Tail or Trunk)
There are some animals – like giraffes – that have long necks. Others – like elephants – have long trunks. While those are useful to them when trying to eat leaves off treetops among other things, they can be useful to you when storing toilet paper.
Of course, I am not talking about the real animals, but about toilet paper holders shaped like them. There are some giraffe-shaped holders that are sold as such, but there are also many other models of animals that can serve the same purpose even though they are sold as toys.
- ANTIQUE CAST IRON HOLDER STAND, use in the kitchen as a vertical paper towel holder or in the bath as a free standing toilet paper holder, decorative and fun in either room, with classic style and perfect functionality
- VINTAGE STYLE DéCOR that fits a wide range of home styles, including antique, rustic, traditional and more; gorgeous and elegant looking with style to spare, this free standing paper towel or toilet tissue holder is a wonderful addition to your home
- HIGH QUALITY MATERIAL, including genuine solid cast iron construction heavy enough to detach paper towels or toilet paper a-handed; vintage style and antique finish resists wear, looks better with age
If you prefer something “historic,” you can get yourself a dinosaur instead of a giraffe or an elephant.

3. The Good Old Basket
If you are looking for something to store your spare rolls of toilet papers in, consider getting a basket.
As for the type of basket you get or the color, that is completely up to you. While some bathrooms might be designed in a way that goes better with weaved natural baskets, others might go better with plastic baskets.
Before buying a new basked, check if you don’t have one that could serve that purpose easily at home already.

4. A Repurposed Coat Hanger
In this idea, the homeowner used a simple wooden coat hanger to hang rolls of toilet paper rather than coats. While you could mount yours straight, I like it mounted at an angle like on the picture below as well.
The one – fairly obvious – thing you should keep in mind if you want to copy this idea is to get a coat hanger with bars long enough to hold toilet paper rolls. Ideally, you would want them to be at least 3 or 4 inches long.
Coat hangers with hooks will not work for obvious reasons.

5. A Branch Hanging on a Rope
In one word, this is idea number one flipped around. Instead of the toilet paper hanging on a rope, it hangs on a branch that is fixed to the wall using a rope.
While I am sure you could buy a similar-looking product somewhere, this is a perfect DIY project. Just cut off a fairly straight branch off a tree you have in your garden, paint it if you want, and attach a rope to it. Then use a hook to hold the toilet paper holder on your wall.
Instead of tying the rope through holes in the branch like on the picture, I recommend just tying it around the branch itself – with a bit of leeway. That way, you will find it much easier to change the roll as you will not have to untie and tie the rope over and over again.

6. A DIY Wooden Toilet Paper Holder with a Shelf
A slightly more complicated DIY project than those introduced above, this one is perfect if you want to introduce your kids to woodworking. Or if you like woodworking in general.
To create this holder, you will need three small boards, a fairly straight branch that’s slightly longer than a toilet paper roll, and a few screws.
The nice thing about this idea is that it not only serves as a toilet paper holder but also as a small shelf. And so, you will be able to put your smartphone or some small decorations on it.

7. A Basket with a Rod
While I talked about using a basket to store your extra toilet paper rolls before, this is an upgrade of the idea.
Instead of just using the basket for spare rolls only, this idea adds an actual toilet paper holder function to it. In other words, you can use it for your “active” roll as well.
That is done by placing a wooden rod across the basket, through its handles. To keep the rod from shifting around too much, you will want to look for a basket with handles that are as small as possible.

8. A (Luxury) Handbag
Whether you are looking for a temporary solution to hold your spare toilet paper rolls or a permanent decoration for your bathroom, a nice handbag hanging on a hook will do the job.
While you can use any handbag that might be in your closet, if you want to show off to your visitors, you might just as well go with a branded – Louis Vuitton perhaps – luxury bag.

9. A Piece of Plumbing
This is one of my favorite ideas. While you can probably find something like this that is ready-made, I would recommend you to make your own custom one.
All you will need will be some pieces of plumbing pipes, connectors, and other attachments. And, you will – of course – need to connect them in a way that has a horizontal pipe sticking out long enough to hold a roll of toilet paper.
If you want to get creative, you can even try to have a separate, longer vertical pipe to hold two or three spare rolls.

10. A Piece of Plumbing with a Shelf
A fairly simple update to the idea above, this design features not only a toilet paper holder but also a small shelf you can use to hold your phone or other smaller items.
You can either install a small wooden board on top of the holder or try to design it in a way where two parallel pipes form a shelf.

11. A DIY Cardboard Toilet Paper Holder
If you’re not into woodworking or assembling plumbing pipes but would still like to make something by yourself, then this idea is perfect for you. It’s also a great project to do with your kids on a weekend.
You will use cardboard to create a “wavy” shelf that will hold your spare toilet paper rolls.
Use an actual toilet paper roll to create the outline of the shelf’s front and back panels. Then, cut those out, add some supports. Once again, use an actual toilet paper roll to measure the distance between the two panels and determine the length of the supports.
Wrap the frame in cardboard, and you are done. That is unless you want to take it a step further and decorate it with some drawings and so on.

12. A Sheep-Shaped Holder
I don’t know who first thought of the fact that a sheep’s wool looks like a bunch of toilet paper rolls, but nowadays it seems to be a fairly common theme when it comes to designing toilet paper holders.
One way to do so is to paint (or stick cutouts of) a sheep’s head and legs on the wall and create a simple, arch-shaped holder above it.
You place a large number of toilet paper rolls into that, and voila – you have a sheep in your bathroom!

13. A LEGO Brick Toilet Paper Holder
Did you like playing with LEGO in your childhood? If so, you might want to try digging out your old bricks or getting a new set and using it to build a toilet paper holder.
While there are many possible designs that you could come up with, the one below is a good start.
It’s basically a house that fits a toilet paper roll and that has a chimney through which you can pull the paper out when you need to use it.

14. An Oversized 3D Printed LEGO Figure
Staying with the LEGO theme, but increasing the scale a bit, how about a 3D printed LEGO figure that is large enough to hold a toilet paper roll?
This is another great idea that started with the simple yellow LEGO man with a red shirt and blue pants. Now, however, there are other figures – such as LEGO Spiderman and LEGO Stormtrooper – available as toilet paper holders as well.
You can find a variety of these and get them 3D printed on Yeggi.

15. A Block of Wood with Openings
Going back to woodworking one last time, this idea uses a large block of wood with openings just large enough to fit toilet paper rolls.
If you have the necessary tools and skills, you can build it yourself. Otherwise, you can ask a handyman to build it for you – just show him a picture of the design and he will know what to do.
Depending on what your bathroom looks like, you might want the piece to look rusty and natural or you might want it to be perfectly flat and painted in a solid color like white or black.

16. An Adjustable Wrench
In a way, this idea is similar to the plumbing pipes idea. However, instead of using plumbing pipes and connectors, you will use a bolt and an adjustable wrench.
And, just like with the plumbing pipes idea, while you can buy this one ready-made, I recommend you to put your “DIY cap” on and make it yourself. All you will need is a bolt somehow secured into the wall, and an adjustable wrench.

17. A Wooden Mannequin
You’ve surely seen him before – and maybe you even have one at your home – the wooden mannequin. A figure of a human that is made out of pieces of wood connected with joints that can simulate the movement of arms and legs.
While it might not seem like it, it’s fairly easy to take that mannequin and adjust him into a toilet paper holder. You will first have to find something that you can attach to his hands – that will be the roll holder.
Then, all you need to do is bend its stand in a way that the wooden piece is parallel with the figure. That way you can attach the mannequin to the wall easily.

18. Tic-Tac-Toe Toilet Paper Holder
Another one of my favorite ideas is this one – “a tic-tac-toilet paper holder.”
To get this done, you will need to buy – or make – a shelf that has 9 square compartments in three rows of three, each roughly the size of a toilet paper roll. You will also need three wooden x-shaped pieces.
Then you can use the toilet paper rolls as the Os and the wooden pieces as the Xs to play tic-tac-toe against yourself while sitting on the toilet…

19. An Old Guitar
Let’s end with a music-themed idea. If you have an old acoustic guitar lying around somewhere in your house, you might want to consider this.
Cut part of its front panel out and simply use it as a shelf to hold your extra toilet paper rolls. Depending on how high your ceiling is, where you place the guitar, etc., you might also need to cut a bit of the neck off to decrease its height.

Summary
While there are hundreds of different products and DIY project ideas for toilet paper holders, the above are some of my most favorite ones. Alternatively, you can just buy one. After all, there are many different types of toilet paper holders ready to be purchased.
If you know about any other great idea, let me know down in the comments. Also, let me know which one of these – if any – you decided to use.
